Help on Buying a Domain
Why should I be interested in acquiring a Domain name?
If you had a traditional (non-internet) business then you would obviously need a real brick and mortar address -- whether owned or rented -- so that your customers could find you and patronize your business. One of the first steps to having an internet presence for your business is getting an "address" where potential customers can find your "store" or web site. This address is the domain name. To acquire a domain you can either Register a new domain name, or Buy a Domain name for sale that has been previously registered.
How do I buy a Domain name or web site?
NamesDotCom does not charge fees to the buyer for this service. All commissions and fees are paid by the seller of the domain name or web site. The first step is to search for domain names or operating web sites for sale and submit an offer -- see Buy a Domain. We have hundreds of domain names listed for sale and sorted by Category, or Alphabetically. After you make an offer, we will forward it to the seller and notify you whether your offer has been accepted, rejected, or if there is a counteroffer. If your offer is accepted, NamesDotCom will send you a Purchase Contract to execute, along with detailed escrow instructions similar to those used in a real estate transaction.
You may also be able to lease the domain name.
Instead of making a cash purchase -- which sometimes can be significant -- you may be able to lease the domain name on a monthly basis. This will result in the following benefits: 1) the upfront cost will be significantly less with just a small advance payment and a small monthly rental for the term of the lease, and 2) it may more closely match the use of the domain name -- for example a short-term web site needed for only a few months. If a lease is desired simply make the request at Your Offers.
What about well known trade names?
We recommend that you refrain from registering or buying a domain name that may infringe on another company's trademark or a famous individual's name. Cybersquatting is frowned upon in the internet community and may actually be illegal. The vast majority of domain names available will not infringe upon a trademark. However, it may be a smart move to investigate the name by using a trademark search firm. See the additional Services such as Trademark Search services that are available in the NamesDotCom web site.
I cannot find the right Domain name in your inventory list. What other option do I have?
First review all of the names in our inventory at Buy a Domain to find a name for your business or to buy a name for investment. If you find a name then simply make an offer at Your Offers.
If you cannot find the "perfect" name in our names inventory, then your next step should be to see if the name is available to register for a nominal fee -- see Register a Domain.
If you find that your desired "perfect" name is already registered by somebody else but it is not in our inventory, then Contact Us -- tell us the domain name and we will contact the owner directly on your behalf to inquire whether the domain name is for sale, and to negotiate the best price for you.
