Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a Domain?

A domain is a totally unique internet address where anyone, at any location in the world, can have a collection of web pages that are publicly accessible. The name of the domain is extremely important and it is vital to the success of any web site. For example, NamesDotCom.com is a domain name. The first part: NamesDotCom is called the second-level domain name. The next part, the .com, is called the top-level domain name. There are many other top level domains such as .net, .biz, .info and .org. The unique second-level and the well known top-level make up the full address to the home page of a particular web site. Domain names are registered through a Registry or through Registry Affiliates such as NamesDotCom at Register a Domain.

2. What are the qualities of a good Domain name?

First, a good domain name is easy to remember. Second, a good domain name should perfectly describe the subject matter of the web pages at the subject web site. Third, it should generally be as short as possible although two, three or even four-word combinations can still be acceptable. Finally, it should stand out as a unique name, not to be easily confused with other similar sounding .com, .net, .biz, .info or .org names.

3. Is it true that the best domain names are all gone?

All of the domain names that were conceptually possible from day one of the internet are still in existence today. It is true that many of the so-called best names have been registered already (such as most of the one-word domain names in English, for example: Business.com). However, many of those registered names are actually for sale. A budding internet entrepreneur might still be able to acquire almost any previously registered domain name for a price. In fact NamesDotCom is a perfect example of a place where an interested party can Buy a Domain name that has previously been registered.
In addition, there are still a virtually unlimited number of word and number/letter combinations that have not yet been registered as domain names. You can search for and Register an available domain name with NamesDotCom.

4. If I register a domain name, must I do a Trademark Search?

To identify pre-existing trademarks that have the potential to conflict with your domain name, you may want to do a Trademark Search. Although this is not mandatory, it makes good business practice. NamesDotCom has provided links to Trademark experts within this web site. On the other hand, if you want to know if someone else is using your name on the web? 5. What are the costs of acquiring a domain name?

For registering a new domain name, there are standard registry costs that are described in Register a Domain Name. However our cost is significantly less than at other registrars.
For buying a previously registered domain name that is available for sale, the price tag can range from $100 up to $1,000,000 or more. Any listed name for sale will have a specific selling price attached to it although sometimes it will be listed as "make an offer". NamesDotCom has many different categories of domain names available all with different prices. See Buy a Domain.

6. What might be the new top-level domains?

The new TLD's already made officially available are .biz and .info. Others such as .name, .coop, .pro, .aero, and .museum have been made available recently. There will likely be other additional TLD's in the years to come.

7. What if someone wants to buy a domain name that I own? What must I do to transfer it?

You will have to follow the directions given to you by your domain name registrar. Usually you will submit a form to the registrar which has been signed and notarized by both the buyer and the seller. The domain name will then be deleted and will be re-registered by the new owner (with a hold put on the domain name so that no third party could register or purchase it in the interim period). The process can be as short as two or three days.
